The Saturday Market has a New Face

The Downtown Development Authority will transition the Saturday Market on the River to another non-profit entity in 2010.

“The market continues to be a great promotional tool for downtown Augusta” says DDA executive director Margaret Woodard. “In keeping with our mission statement of incubating new events, we have achieved our goals in privatizing the market and finding it a permanent home on the 8th Street Plaza. It is time for a new face.”

That new face is Brooke Buxton, a long-time market vendor who operates a back-yard nursery and is part of the family-owned business New Life Natural Foods. An Augusta native, she manages physical therapy centers and has a great deal of international experience. “Brooke brings a lot to the table”, says Woodard. “She has participated with the market since 2007, has the business savvy, great organizational skills, and a great deal of energy, enthusiasm and vision. She has quickly established a great track record.”

There will be new changes for the market this season. The market will begin its season on April 17th and extend through October. Operating hours will be extended to 2:00 pm every Saturday and a holiday market is scheduled for December 4th.

The new market website, www.theaugustamarket.com, is in the process of being updated where patrons can purchase merchandise and access a full schedule of events and vendors and sponsors can easily access vendor applications and sponsorship packages.

Ms. Buxton is also creating partnerships with other downtown activities and venues for greater exposure and outreach.

“I am really excited about the possibilities for the 2010 season” says Brooke. “We have new sponsors on board and the vendor response to date has been phenomenal. Partnering with other organizations will create a new energy and provide patrons a fun-filled Saturday in downtown Augusta."
